International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026)

#IYRP2026, a year proclaimed by the United Nations.

The United Nations General Assembly, at its 76th session, proclaimed 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP). FAO is the lead agency for the observance of this Year, in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders.

#IYRP2026 offers a unique opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of rangelands and pastoralists, and to advocate for increased responsible investments and policies tailored to the pastoral sector. It calls for policies that ensure pastoralists’ access to land and natural resources, support mobility, and promote customary and inclusive governance systems, while encouraging adequate investments in rangeland management, ecosystem restoration, animal health services, and fair and equitable value chains.

Global Alliance for Rangelands and Pastoralists

The Global Alliance for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) is an international coalition of stakeholders mobilized to prepare, coordinate, and amplify actions related to the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026, proclaimed by the United Nations. At the launch of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP), the global coalition is supported by 102 countries and 409 organizations worldwide.

    CIRAD within the Global Alliance

    CIRAD is an active member of the Global Coalition for Rangelands and Pastoralists, notably through co-facilitating the regional network of the International Year in West Africa. It contributes to numerous working and reflection groups focusing on land degradation neutrality, the pastoral economy, and climate change.

    CIRAD continues to actively mobilize in support of promoting pastoral practices, with several objectives:

    • To enhance recognition of pastoralism as a multifunctional livestock system that is resilient in the face of change;
    • To strengthen scientific knowledge on pastoralism to inform decision-making;
    • To advocate for stronger public support and investment in sustainable pastoralism.
